Objects can become an extension of our personality and how we present ourselves to the world. We can glimpse a person’s values by looking at the objects around them. As Bruno Latour writes, “Objects cannot exist independently without being imbued with human presence, and the more modern and complex they are, the more they are imbued with human activity.” Interpreting the objects around us is essential to understanding ourselves and how consumer society operates. When objects are removed from their usual places, rich cultural and historical dimensions can be revealed, and the objects become worth studying. Between the chopsticks and the fork, more than just the manner of eating looms. The things we touch, buy, and miss in our daily encounters guide us in subtle ways, and exploring our interactions with the objects around us is crucial to our understanding of our place in society. Artist Hyoju Cheon, with performers Chaesong Kim and Ari LaMora, will present a performance at the opening of the exhibition. Around Cheon’s sculpture, their bodies rotate, fold, and dance in space, moving from regular traveling speeds to long, gentle, slow movements, then back to regular gestures, and so on. Hyoju Cheon’s sculpture is a metaphor for the objects and phenomena that are often ignored in our efficient daily lives. By touching the artwork, the performers can genuinely feel the texture of the sculpture as an object, which is contrary to the concept of the rarified art object protected behind glass. This tactile experience challenges the artwork’s commodity status and instead aligns it with the warmth and play of everyday objects and spaces. This slow interaction brings the viewer, the space, and the objects within it closer together and prompts deeper thinking about this intimacy. In the relentless stream of consumer goods in capitalist societies, our perception of objects becomes distorted. We constantly seek to fill our inner emptiness with one commodity after another, yet this pursuit causes us to overlook and miss out on grasping the true nature of objects. As explored by Jane Bennett in her book Vibrant Matter, “the sheer volume of commodities, and the hyper-consumptive necessity of junking them to make room for new ones, conceals the vitality of matter.” The performance resists the rapid change and ruthless efficiency of our meritocratic society. During the performance, time seems to slow down, even stand still. it practices the sense of “pause” proposed by Han in The Burnout Society: “Pure positive wisdom expands what is already there, and truly turning to the other requires a negatory pause.” In this positive society, excessive stimulation, fragmentation of information, and diminishing interpersonal relationships produce mental obstruction, causing us to lose our contemplative focus. In the performance, Cheon adds and emphasizes a playfulness of atmosphere and movement. Between fun and wit, the performance explores the attitude of breaking out of the established paradigm and finding self-balance in today’s doping society. From a carefree childhood to an atom in a compressed, homogenized society, the individual’s social experience and ideological transformation are worthy of profound reflection. Between the play and the chance to slow down, we can explore our bodies, memories, and spaces anew. Han observes, “There is also contemplative concentration to interpret what is suspended, what is hidden or fleeting.” Cheon’s performance leads the audience away from triviality and complexity, even if only for a brief moment, encouraging us to find power in pausing and tranquility. Her site-specific installations and performances respond to her physical surroundings and investigate how bodies traverse built environments. In Mapping without Scale, Cheon considers how the home affects the bodies that inhabit it with a series of ceramic and insulation foam objects. In addition to these physical works, during the opening of the exhibition (June 1st from 6-8 pm), the artist will stage a performance reenacting the process of creating the works. Set in the domestic setting of the gallery, Cheon’s interventions consider the home as contradictory. Despite being a place where one may spend much of their time, the domestic space is often overlooked. Inconspicuous nooks in walls, floors, and corners are the points of departure for her installation. The site-specific works presented in Mapping without Scale map these unnoticed spaces to emphasize their presence and materiality. The word “map” is derived from the medieval Latin mappa mundi, in which mappa means napkin or cloth, and mundi the world. Unlike the cartographic tradition, which is rooted in a scientific and exact understanding of space, Cheon’s practice is an alternate form of mapping: one that charts the body’s trajectory through space. Her process begins by sketching out the nooks and crannies in the gallery and drawing abstract and amorphous forms that inhabit them. Cheon then recreates these shapes three-dimensionally using clay or insular foam. Next, she imprints her body onto these objects, leaving remnants of her form and mass before firing the clay and carving the insular foam to capture these voids. To Cheon, however, empty space is full of possibilities. Rather than viewing them as hollow, she suggests that they contain the potential to re-establish the relationship between the body and the home. By leaving her imprints on the objects, she invites the viewer to reconsider their relationship to the lived space. Taking into account the fact that insulation foam has historically been used as a construction material in most urban dwellings, and that ceramic is frequently employed in kitchens and bathrooms, the materials that Cheon uses refer to both the gallery’s particular built environment and a shared structure of domestic spaces. By mapping how her own body interacts with the space and defying traditional scaling systems, Cheon locates the uncharted or hidden landscapes of our bodies’ relationship to the home. My body moving in the house, my body moving in the studio. My body taking up space in spaces.&nbsp; My body is mechanized by repeated actions, drawing a certain trajectory. My body is automated, but not mechanized, it's somewhere between those two options. My body is not a machine but is like a machine that struggles against the implied boredom of routine. Through the symbolic actions of my performance I imbue joy into the repetitive movements of my daily tasks. I agonize about the interaction of my body with the soft plastic chair, or squeeze myself through the donut-like tunnel. How is sitting in it different or similar to sitting in a “real” chair or walking through a real tunnel? What is the state of my mind in these spaces? I observe it. It doesn't matter which specific spaces are represented by the symbolic objects in my symbolic journey. What matters now is the way in which my energy is affected, sometimes positively like the social opening up in a cafe or at times negatively like a&nbsp; contamination that comes from a crowded and claustrophobic space.&nbsp; It becomes more important whether there is inward flow of energy or outward and how much energy I am using, how full or how depleted I might become. In the performance, I grab objects to care for them, to learn, or wear, or nurse… before my body moves to the next performative station. When I don’t touch the thing it remains as an object.&nbsp; If I hold or wear the objectsI, they become subjects. The object repeatedly experiences an equivalent of being a subject by interacting with my body in an object state. I imagine movement with traces of orbit drawn by my body. I consider how repeated body movements are restricted by my thoughts, the language we use. The mundane movements are made absurd within the context of the performance by carrying out the expected repetitive movements of everyday life. With this performance I seek to go against the limits that we experience, such as social norms, societal shaming and parental control. Copyright 2026.
